Nekoosa is 2-8 against Westfield Area since May of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Papermakers will square off against the Pioneers at 5:00 p.m. Nekoosa is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.4 runs per game this season.
Nekoosa's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They blew past Mauston 15-0. The victory continues a trend for the Papermakers in their matchups with the Golden Eagles: they've now won eight in a row.
Raegen Wilhorn looked comfortable as she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Sofia Gaupp was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024. Karissa Cote also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Nekoosa always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .733. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Westfield Area didn't have quite enough to beat Wisconsin Dells on Tuesday and fell 12-11. The loss continues a trend for the Pioneers in their meetings with the Chiefs: they've now lost six in a row.
Holly Goodwin made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Halle Drew, who scored two runs while going 2-for-5.
Westfield Area suffered their first road defeat, dropping their record down to 3-5. As for Nekoosa, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Thursday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Nekoosa has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .483. However, it's not like Westfield Area struggles in that department as they've averaged .460. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Nekoosa was able to grind out a solid win over Westfield Area in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, winning 10-6. Do the Papermakers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Pioneers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
