Softball Recap: Covington Takes a Loss

Covington had lost four straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 3-9 to make it five. They came up short against the Southmont Mounties, falling 20-4. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Trojans of the 18-4 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Covington saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Preslee Shaw, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Another was Alexus Peaslee, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with one run.

As for Southmont, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games.

On Southmont's side, Kenzie Clate made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up four earned runs off only two hits. Those nine strikeouts gave Clate a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Anna Stokes was incredible, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Kendall Priebe was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Covington will square off against Fountain Central at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Trojans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Mustangs have averaged an impressive 7.2 runs per game this season. As for Southmont, they will challenge Crawfordsville at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Mounties are facing the Athenians at the right time seeing as the Athenians are stuck on a five-game losing streak.
