Choctaw County is 8-2 against Southern Choctaw since December of 2017, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. Both teams will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 26th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a three-game winning streak alive.
Choctaw County posted their biggest victory yet this season on Wednesday. They really took it to Millry for the full four quarters, racking up a 44-4 win at home. The team ran away with 35 points in the first half and mostly just sat on those to pick up the win.
Choctaw County can attribute much of their success to Kamya Straight, who scored 11 points along with six steals, and India Graham, who scored 16 points along with two steals. Straight is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Thomas, who scored four points.
Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Southern Choctaw beat Marengo 33-28 on Tuesday.
It was another big night for Marcionna Young, who scored 15 points along with three steals. Young is absolutely dominating the point category: she's posted at least 15 every time she's taken the court this season. Keri Mcgee was another key contributor, scoring six points along with nine rebounds and two steals.
Choctaw County's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-9. As for Southern Choctaw, their win bumped their record up to 8-3.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Choctaw County have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 22.3 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Southern Choctaw struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26.7 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Choctaw County lost to Southern Choctaw at home by a decisive 67-52 margin in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Young, who dropped a double-double on 33 points and ten rebounds. Now that Choctaw County knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
