The Greencastle Tiger Cubs will challenge the North Putnam Cougars at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Greencastle is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
North Putnam will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Greencastle extended their winning streak to three on Monday. The Tiger Cubs were the clear victors by a 15-4 margin over Southmont. The Tiger Cubs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by seven runs or more this season.
Sam Gooch was incredible, going 1-for-2 with four stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May of 2024. Nathan Sutherlin was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Greencastle was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .381. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Southmont only posted a batting average of .250.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but North Putnam ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They won by a run and slipped past South Putnam 5-4. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive win against them.
The team relied heavily on Brayden Chew, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of North Putnam's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 2-4 when he doesn't).
Greencastle pushed their record up to 7-2 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for North Putnam, their victory bumped their record up to 4-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Greencastle has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like North Putnam struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Greencastle skirted past North Putnam 3-2 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Do the Tiger Cubs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
