It was a good run, but the St. Marys Blue Devils unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Thursday. They took a 78-70 hit to the loss column at the hands of Wheeling Central Catholic. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as St. Marys came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 15th, while Wheeling Central Catholic is ranked 170th).
St. Marys lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Brynnley Bulluck, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Callie Powell, who scored ten points along with six assists and six rebounds.
Wheeling Central Catholic got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Kaitlyn Blake out in front who scored 20 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. Blake is absolutely dominating the point category: she's posted at least 15 every time she's taken the court this season. Bella Fitzsimmons was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
St. Marys' loss dropped their record down to 12-4. As for Wheeling Central Catholic, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-4.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Marys will take on Wirt County at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Wirt County has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games. As for Wheeling Central Catholic, they will be playing at home against University at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. University has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 403 points over their last six matches.
