Clairemont and Scripps Ranch are an even 3-3 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Chieftains will take on the Falcons at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Clairemont is coming into the contest hot, having won their last six games.
If Clairemont beats Scripps Ranch with 15 runs on Tuesday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matches with that exact score. Everything went the Chieftains' way against University City on Thursday as they made off with a 15-1 win. Considering the Chieftains have won seven games by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Gigi Villalpando spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits.
At the plate, Maelea Silao was incredible, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with five RBI, three runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Maddy Finley was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run and four RBI.
Clairemont kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They are 7-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Scripps Ranch suffered their closest loss since March 8th on Thursday. They fell just short of Canyon Hills by a score of 3-1. The Falcons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Scripps Ranch also got a good showing from Kenzie Johnson, who tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. Johnson has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Scripps Ranch saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alina Grady, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one double.
Clairemont's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-7. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.3 runs over those games. As for Scripps Ranch, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-6.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Clairemont hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .357. However, it's not like Scripps Ranch struggles in that department as they've averaged .314. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Clairemont came out on top in a nail-biter against Scripps Ranch when the teams last played back in May of 2019, sneaking past 7-5. Do the Chieftains have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Falcons turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
