Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Evan Wysong of
Cleveland (Rio Rancho) is the 2022 MaxPreps New Mexico High School Football Player of the Year for the second straight year. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound senior quarterback helped the Storm go 11-2 record and capture the Class 6A state championship for a second consecutive season.
In the championship game against La Cueva on Saturday, Wysong ran all over the field for 246 yards and bolted for touchdown runs of 2, 59 and 72 yards as the Storm won 75-61.
In the section semifinals against Volcano Vista the previous week, Wysong scored two rushing touchdowns as the Storm overcame a halftime deficit to win.
Committed to New Mexico, Wysong threw for 2,008 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions this season. He added an additional 1,288 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground.
During his junior and senior seasons, Wysong led the Storm to a 24-2 record and the two losses, both this season, were by a total of seven points.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.
