South Pittsburg and Whitwell are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2022, but likely not for long. The Pirates will be taking part in a tournament against the Tigers at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (South Pittsburg has four straight wins, Whitwell has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
If South Pittsburg beats Whitwell with six runs on Wednesday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. The Pirates beat Copper Basin on Tuesday by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 6-5.

Kaylee Kilgore spent all 10.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 18 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, South Pittsburg let Macy Mashburn and Chelsea Mayfield run wild. Mashburn went 2-for-6 with two runs and one RBI, while Mayfield went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Mayfield a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kynleigh Rice, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Whitwell didn't have quite enough to beat South Pittsburg last Tuesday and fell 6-5.
Jasie Willis was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out 13 batters over 11 innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. Willis was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-6 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Ella Grace Harvey was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double. Ella Layne was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Whitwell's loss dropped their record down to 6-12. As for South Pittsburg, their victory bumped their record up to 11-9.
South Pittsburg came out on top in a nail-biter against Whitwell in their previous meeting last Tuesday, sneaking past 6-5. Do the Pirates have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Tigers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
