Video: MaxPreps Cup - Jesuit (Portland, Ore.)
Strong spring season propels Crusaders to the top of the list.Building on its strong winter performance,
Jesuit (Portland, Ore.) captured the MaxPreps Cup for the 2015-16 school year by winning four state championships during the spring.
The MaxPreps Cup uses state championship performances and national rankings to determine the nation's top overall high school sports programs. Jesuit won state titles in baseball, softball, boys tennis and girls track. Jesuit had previously won state titles in football, girls volleyball, girls swimming, girls soccer and boys swimming.
Jesuit's win ends the two-year reign of Bentonville (Ark.), which had won the MaxPreps Cup in 2013-14 and 2014-15. Bentonville finished in second place for 2015-16 with 958 points and seven state championships.
Jesuit wasn't the only Oregon school to score well in this year's MaxPreps Cup. Summit (Bend) won a total of 11 state titles at the 5A level in Oregon to finish in fourth place overall. Summit is the top performing medium school program in the standings.
A pair of Atlanta schools finished in the top five. Westminster, the 2012-13 MaxPreps Cup champion, finished at No. 3 with 877 points while Marist finished at No. 5 with 824.
Bishop England (Charleston, S.C.) comes in at No. 19 in the overall standings and is the top small schools program.
The MaxPreps Cup is determined by ranking all schools that win a state
championship or finish second at the state level (or section level if there is
no state competition).
Points are also weighted, rewarding states that have a large number of schools, as well as more
points to schools that compete in larger enrollment divisions. Sports
are also weighted differently, with football and basketball, among
others, receiving more points than sports like golf and tennis.
Teams
are also given points for being ranked in the Xcellent 25 football and
volleyball rankings, the MaxPreps soccer computer rankings and the DyeStat national cross country rankings.
