The University Trailblazers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their third straight loss. They took a 50-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of Lapel. While losing is never fun, University can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 165th, while Lapel is ranked 49th).
Despite the defeat, University saw an underclassman step up: Charlotte Conyers scored 15 points along with four steals. Conyers is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Anyah Jordan-Turley, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.
Lapel's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Laniah Wills, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 16 rebounds. Wills has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times she's played. Madelyn Poynter was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with five assists and three steals.
University now has a losing record at 9-10. As for Lapel, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-4 record this season.
University will head out on the road to challenge Heritage Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Lapel, they will be playing at home against Wapahani at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
