The Somerville Pioneers lost against the Phillipsburg Stateliners back in January of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. Somerville suffered a tough 64-38 defeat at the hands of Phillipsburg. While losing is never fun, Somerville can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey basketball rankings (they are ranked 165th, while Phillipsburg is ranked ninth).
Matthew Scerbo jr. continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Phillipsburg, scoring 23 points along with six assists and five rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Scerbo jr. has scored at least a third of Phillipsburg's points. Andrew Martin was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
Somerville's loss dropped their record down to 8-10. As for Phillipsburg, the win was the 14th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-1.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Somerville will take on Warren Hills Regional at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Phillipsburg, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against West Morris Central at 7:00 p.m. West Morris Central is no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.
