Sparta (N.J.) recaptured the lead on a touchdown run by
Codie Aromando with less than a minute remaining in the third. Pope John XXIII grabbed hold of the lead when
Noah Brown ran for a touchdown with under a minute left in the fourth quarter, and never relinquished it.
By the end of the third, PJX found itself trailing by 3 points as the Spartans captured the lead thanks to one score in the quarter. Sparta scored on a touchdown run by Aromando in the quarter.
Pope John XXIII's standout player in the win was
Dashawn Chatelier. The junior caught one touchdown. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.
Aromando played well for SHS. The senior ran for one touchdown.
The Spartans' lone touchdown came on a run by Aromando in the third quarter.
PJX got revenge for last year's 13-6 loss to Sparta with the victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Sparta, which notched a 59-47 victory over Morris Hills in its previous outing. With the win Pope John XXIII extended its winning streak to four games.
In a Northwest Jersey - American game next week Sparta (4-1) takes on High Point, and Pope John XXIII (4-1) will go up against Vernon also in a Northwest Jersey - American game.
