A big part of Montgomery Academy's win came down to the chemistry between Reid McBride and his top target Ali Nelson. McBride threw for 218 yards and three touchdowns while completing 72.2% of his passes while Nelson gained 150 total yards and two touchdowns. What's more, Nelson racked up 127 rushing yards, the most he's had since back in September. A healthy portion of McBride's aerial production (125 yards to be exact) went to Jarrett Friendly, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Montgomery Academy proved: they limited Alabama Christian Academy to a paltry 2.2 yards per carry. The team can thank Braden Gordon for the heroic effort on defense: he. Montgomery Academy hasn't allowed more than 9.1 yards per carry in three consecutive matchups.
Montgomery Academy's defense didn't let Christian Snipes, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. John Bennett Lester refused to say out of the backfield, picking up two sacks all by himself. Montgomery Academy got some further help from Gordon: he made 13 total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, Flomaton ended up a good deal behind Northview on Friday and lost 28-14. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Hurricanes came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' football rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 183rd in Alabama, while the Chiefs are ranked 403rd in Florida).
Montgomery Academy will have to contain Zykenzie Martin as he made an impact in Flomaton's last game. He rushed for 80 yards and a pair of scores.
Montgomery Academy's record now sits at 9-1. As for Flomaton, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-4.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Montgomery Academy has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 195.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Flomaton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 150 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Montgomery Academy against Flomaton when the teams last played back in November of 2021, as the team secured a 35-7 victory. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Hurricanes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
