The South Mecklenburg Sabres put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They escaped with a win against Olympic by the margin of a single free throw, 53-52. Given South Mecklenburg's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 54th, while Olympic is ranked 449th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Peter Moye continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 19 points along with 5 rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which he has scored at least 25% of South Mecklenburg's points. Yariel Chudgar was another key contributor, scoring 6 points along with 3 steals.
Several Trojans players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was RANDY JOHNSON, who scored 16 points along with 5 rebounds. JOHNSON scored a full 30.8% of Olympic's points, the second time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of MAURICE SABB, who scored 15 points.
Olympic struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as South Mecklenburg pulled down 11.
South Mecklenburg's win bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Olympic, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-6.
South Mecklenburg will head out on the road to face off against Berry at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Berry is coming into the game on a five-game losing streak. As for Olympic, they will square off against South Aiken at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully South Aiken focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Friday.
