Softball Game Preview: Triton Hawks vs. South Johnston Trojans

Triton is 1-9 against South Johnston since May of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. Triton will square off against South Johnston at 6:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Triton sitting on eight straight victories and South Johnston on seven.

Triton took a nine-run defeat the last time they faced off against Cape Fear, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Triton sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 17-16 win over Cape Fear on Wednesday. Triton's victory was all the more impressive since the Colts were averaging only 2.89 runs allowed on the season.

Triton got a massive performance out of Bailey Johnson, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of her eight plate appearances. Johnson is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged two or more in each of the last three games she's played. Sydney Bradham was another key player, going 2-for-6 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple.

Triton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South Johnston). Their pitchers stepped up to hand Southern Wayne a 25-0 shutout on Friday. Considering the Trojans have won six games by more than nine runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Triton pushed their record up to 9-1 with the win, which was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 15.0 runs this season. As for South Johnston, their record now sits at 7-1.

Triton might still be hurting after the 10-1 loss they got from South Johnston in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can Triton avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
