The Washington Patriots will face off against the Morgantown Mohigans at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday. Washington's pitching crew has only allowed 3.3 runs per game this season, so Morgantown's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Washington is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Sherando just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 7-6.
Brayden Edwards put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
Edwards wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Connor Smith, who went 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, after only one run in their last matchup, Morgantown made sure to put some runs up on the board against Hoover on Friday. The Mohigans walked away with an 11-6 victory over the Huskies.
Grayson Campbell tossed a big game, striking out eight batters over 6.2 innings while giving up five earned runs off eight hits. Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
At the plate, Weston Mazey was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Eli Boggs, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs.
Morgantown always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .550. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hoover only posted an OBP of .343.
Morgantown has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Washington, their loss dropped their record down to 8-5.
Washington came up short against Morgantown when the teams last played two weeks ago, falling 7-2. Can the Patriots avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
