Baseball Recap: Cayuga Starts Season with Victory Against Hubbard

Cayuga had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They put the hurt on the Hubbard Jaguars with a sharp 18-1 victory on Monday. The Wildcats have beaten the Jaguars the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Jaguars has come to flipping the script.

Gus Wilfong made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. That's the most doubles he has posted since back in March of 2024.

In other pitching news, Cash Conner looked comfortable as he scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5.

Back at the plate, Micah Redwine and Grayson Walker did most of the damage at the plate: Redwine scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Walker scored three runs while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. That's the most runs Redwine has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Turman, who scored two runs while going 1-for-1.

Cayuga always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .643. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hubbard only posted an OBP of .227.

Cayuga wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 14-1 win against Bland on the 21st. As for Hubbard, they have also already played their next matchup, a 14-2 defeat against Aggieland HomeSchool on the 20th.
