Even though the Morenci Wildcats have not done well against the Bisbee Pumas recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Morenci took down Bisbee 51-33. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Morenci.
Elena Leonard was the offensive standout of the game as she scored 28 points along with five steals. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 13 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Tiara Jones, who scored eight points along with ten rebounds.
Morenci's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-8. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.3 points per game. As for Bisbee, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Morenci will square off against Pima at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Pima presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Morenci in Arizona (Pima is ranked 24th, while Morenci is ranked 121st). Bisbee's road trip will continue as they head out to face St. David at 5:30 p.m. on January 11th. St. David's defense has only allowed 28.9 points per game this season, so Bisbee's offense will have their work cut out for Bisbee.
