The Winthrop Vikings will head out to square off against the Masconomet Regional Chieftains at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Winthrop is coming into the game on a four-game losing streak.
The home team had come away the winner the last four times Winthrop and Swampscott had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Vikings fell 10-5 to the Big Blue on Wednesday.
Winthrop saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lucy Boncore, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Masconomet Regional, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Beverly on Wednesday, sneaking past 3-2.
Sydnee Vocino spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on three hits.
At the plate, Angie Vecchio was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double. That triple was her first of the season.
Masconomet Regional pushed their record up to 6-7 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.2 runs over those games. As for Winthrop, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-10.
Winthrop's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's contest. The Vikings have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.6 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Masconomet Regional, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Winthrop continue to outrun the ball?
Winthrop suffered a grim 23-2 defeat to Masconomet Regional when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Vikings avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
