In 2012, Lionel Messi broke the world record for goals in a calendar year with 91 — tallying 79 for FC Barcelona and 12 while playing for Argentina. Nine years later, junior
Taylor Zdrojewski of
Celina (Texas) is having a season for the ages, breaking the Texas high school girls soccer state record Tuesday by bringing her 2021 total to 112 goals.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the four-star recruit scored every goal in a 7-0 Class 4A Region II semifinal win over Bullard at City Bank Stadium in Forney. She's piled up 25 goals in four playoff wins thus far.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) record book, Zdrojewski broke the state single-season mark of 109 goals set in 2016 by Esmeralda Gonzales of South Hills (Fort Worth). The national record is 130 set in 2017 by Kassi Ginther of Summit Christian Academy (Mo.).
With the victory, Celina improved to 23-1-1 and faces Henderson in Thursday's regional finals.

Zdrojewski told the
Dallas Morning News she thought about the record at the start of the season. "By the middle of the year, I saw the track I was on and said, 'Let's get to 100.' Then, I said 'Let's get the record.' "
She did Tuesday.
"There was so much adrenaline going into that shot," she said of her record-breaking 110th goal. "I didn't think I was going to get (the record) tonight. I'd missed so many shots before, so I took it as just another shot."
According to statistics on MaxPreps supplied by Celina coach Steve Nichols, Zdrojewski has scored at least four goals in all but five of the team's matches, notching hat tricks in all but two. She also has 19 assists and 251 points total.
Celina has had quite a resurgence since 2017-18 when it went 5-8-3. The last two seasons, the Bobcats have gone 15-3-1 and 11-3-2 before this deep playoff run. The team's 239 goals is approaching a state record as well.
