The Myers Park Mustangs put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They came out on top against East Rutherford by a score of 44-37. Given Myers Park's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked sixth, while East Rutherford is ranked 92nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Myers Park's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Amani Barner, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds. Barner continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jerin Truesdale, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Despite the defeat, East Rutherford had strong showings from Jada Whitesides, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and three steals, and Taniyah Cash, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Whitesides is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 13 games she's played.
East Rutherford struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Myers Park's win bumped their record up to 14-0. As for East Rutherford, their loss dropped their record down to 14-2.
Myers Park will be playing in front of their home fans against Olympic at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Olympic focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 24 on Saturday. As for East Rutherford, they will head out on the road to face off against R-S Central at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
