Fairhope got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Trey Garner out in front who threw for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also rushed for 38 yards. Garner's passing game has become a key predictor of the Pirates' success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 110 or higher, but only 1-3 otherwise. Nic Ronsisvalle also helped with two TDs in total.
Meanwhile, Central faced Hoover in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Red Devils were the clear victors by a 34-10 margin over the Buccaneers. The result was nothing new for the Red Devils, who have now won nine games by 23 points or more so far this season.
Central's win came from a few key players Fairhope will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Jayshaun Woodhouse, who rushed for 186 yards and two scores while picking up 7.4 yards per carry, and also picked up 30 receiving yards. He showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 65 yards. Another receiver making a difference was JJ Joiner, who picked up 138 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
One reason for the win was Central's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Tristan Lyles, Marcus Price, and Aiden Lyles, who each picked up one sack apiece. Tristan was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making nine total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Central's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 7.3 points on average over those games. As for Fairhope, their win bumped their record up to 8-3.
Fairhope was taken down by Central 49-21 in their previous meeting back in November of 2020. That matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Pirates were down 35-0.
