4A Oregon West recap October 22, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in 4A Oregon West this week, Philomath beat Cascade 45-14. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Newport led the league in scoring this week by notching 55 points on Taft.
Central's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Ben Finnegan threw for 184 and 4 touchdowns and Grant Lindley had 71 yards receiving. On the ground Tell Cruickshank contributed 144 yards. Colby Jackson helped Central's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 62 yards.
Madison Stepp was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Panthers topped Stayton. The 6-foot-2 sophomore racked up 2 sacks.
He went 9-14 with 0 interceptions.
Lindley was the best wideout in the league this week as Central bested the Eagles. Lindley tallied 4 receptions for 71 yards. Jackson helped Central's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 62 yards.
Central's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Panthers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Finnegan has thrown for 1,302 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, while Jackson has 22 catches for 376 yards.
Shane Hedrick's team's Wesley Riddell needs only 98 yards against the Cubs next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 132 carries Riddell has put up 902 yards this year.
An important game coming up in 4A Oregon West this week will be when Newport takes on the Panthers. As it stands, Kurt Hargett's team is in fourth, while Central is in second.
The league will see a high scoring game when the Cubs and the Panthers face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Newport comes in having scored 68 this season, while Central has scored 226. The Cubs scored 55 points last week as they beat the Tigers.
Newport made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 10,205 from 10,740. The improvement was the result of a 55-20 victory over Taft last week.
