5A District 6 recap October 1, 2013
St. Paul's Marcus Gaines rumbled for the longest rushing play in 5A District 6 this season in his game against Slidell last week. Gaines' team topped the Tigers as he sprinted for 99 yards on the play and finished with 217 in all.
Covington was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping Northshore. The Lions came in at 22 in the state poll after placing at number 27 last week.
St. Paul's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Ryan O'Krepki threw for 125 and 2 touchdowns and Jalen McCleskey had 86 yards receiving. On the ground Gaines contributed 217 yards.
Dalvin Populist provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Panthers lost to Covington. He completed 4 passes for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 109 yards.
Gaines was a beast in the backfield as Kenny Sears' team defeated Slidell.
O'Krepki put up the best numbers in passing as the Wolves bested the Tigers. O'Krepki's favorite target this week was McCleskey, who caught 4 passes for 86 yards.
St. Paul's O'Krepki and Mitreon Brumfield led the league in both passing and receiving yards. O'Krepki has thrown for 688 yards this season, while Brumfield has 15 catches for 282 yards. Northshore's Bryce Perez leads the league in rushing yards with 408.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Mike Bourg's team takes on Ponchatoula. The Panthers are currently in first, while the Green Wave are in fifth.
Greg Salter's team was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from sixth to third in 5A District 6. The Lions vanquished Northshore 21-20 earlier in the week.
