The Mariner Tritons came tearing into Saturday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 points) and they left with even more momentum. They managed a 74-70 win over Discovery. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Mariner's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Marcus Kelley Jr led the charge by dropping a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. Kelley Jr is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Corey Hunter, who scored 20 points along with five assists.
When it comes to explaining why Discovery lost, one person who can't be blamed is Darius Livingston. Despite the final result, he scored 31 points along with six rebounds and five steals. Another player making a difference was Trevin West, who scored 11 points.
Mariner has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a massive bump to their 13-8 record this season. As for Discovery, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 13-5.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mariner will square off against Gateway at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Discovery's road trip will continue as they head out to face George Jenkins at 7:30 p.m. on January 22nd. George Jenkins is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.
