The Poston Butte Broncos will square off against the Salpointe Catholic Lancers at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Poston Butte comes in on four and Salpointe Catholic on five.
Poston Butte is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They came out on top against Flagstaff by a score of 11-7.
Haylee Lopez was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off 14 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kimberly Westover, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Brylee Litviak was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Poston Butte kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 17-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Salpointe Catholic made easy work of Walden Grove on Tuesday and carried off an 8-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Lancers, who have now won 11 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Salpointe Catholic also got a great performance from Audri Elias as she struck out seven batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk).
On the hitting side, Isabel Otero was excellent, going 1-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Leylani Cuesta, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Poston Butte pushed their record up to 20-9 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Salpointe Catholic, their record now sits at 22-6-1.
Poston Butte might still be hurting after the 15-0 loss they got from Salpointe Catholic in their previous meeting back in May of 2021. Can the Broncos avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
