Baseball Recap: Cathedral Wins High-Profile Contest Against Carmel

Cathedral faced Carmel in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Fighting Irish blew past the Greyhounds 12-2. The result was nothing new for the Fighting Irish, who have now won nine matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Eli Bennett made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Connor Christiansen and Bo Cooper did most of the damage at the plate: Christiansen got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double, while Cooper got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two RBI and one double. What's more, Cooper posted two hits, the most he's had over his last nine games. Another player making a difference was Cameron Koers, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

Cathedral was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Carmel only posted a batting average of .105.

Cathedral has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 17-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Carmel, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 15-8.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cathedral will host New Palestine at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Carmel, they will welcome Harrison at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
