Pearl hasn't had much luck against Northwest Rankin recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Pearl Pirates will venture away from home to challenge the Northwest Rankin Cougars at 6:30 p.m. Pearl is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
While Pearl's victory against Enterprise wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Pearl had just enough and edged out Enterprise 8-7.
The team relied heavily on Shiloh Wells, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one double. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Lauryn Lee, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Northwest Rankin faced Petal in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. Northwest Rankin came out on top against Petal by a score of 5-2 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The win continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won three in a row.
Grace Wallis made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI.
Wallis wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Brooke Smith, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Smith has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.
Northwest Rankin's record is now 10-2. As for Pearl, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season.
Both Pearl and Northwest Rankin just can't seem to miss. Pearl has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.7 hits per game. However, it's not like Northwest Rankin struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.6 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Pearl suffered a grim 12-0 defeat to Northwest Rankin when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can Pearl avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
