The Russell Red Devils will square off against the Fairland Dragons at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Russell is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
If Russell beats Fairland with 15 runs on Friday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. The Red Devils blew past Rowan County 15-2 on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Red Devils, who have now won 12 contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Lokelio Ancheta was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Ancheta was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Jacob Toliver was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs. Another player making a difference was Jayden Frasure, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and five RBI.
Russell always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .611. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rowan County only posted an OBP of .300.
Fairland might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 3-1 to Portsmouth, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Dragons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Russell is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for Fairland, they now have a losing record of 9-10.
Fairland's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Russell hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .331. It's a different story for Fairland, though, as they've only averaged .240. Will they be able to contain Russell's hitters?
Russell got the 'W' when the teams last played back in March against Fairland by a conclusive 9-2 score. Will the Red Devils repeat their success, or do the Dragons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
