The Sabino Sabercats waltzed into their matchup on Monday with five straight wins but they left with six. They took down Canyon del Oro 57-39. Winning is a bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 19 to 8 on the offensive boards, as Sabino did.
Sabino's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jayda Haley led the charge by dropping a double-double on 14 points and 13 rebounds. Haley is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. Marie Gomez-Munoz was another key contributor, scoring 19 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Despite the loss, Canyon del Oro still got an impressive performance from Halie Fuller, who dropped a triple-double on 14 points, 18 rebounds, and ten blocks. Fuller has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last 17 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Madisen Fleury, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
Sabino is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matches, which provided a massive bump to their 11-11 record this season. As for Canyon del Oro, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-15.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sabino will take on Empire at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Empire comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 25 points in their last eight games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. Canyon del Oro won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Pueblo at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Pueblo is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
