Basketball Recap: Marshall Comes Up Short

Marshall was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They took a 59-45 bruising from the Casey-Westfield Warriors. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Lions this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 49-45 back in November of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Marshall lost, don't look at Payton McGuire. Despite the final result, he went 10 for 21 en route to 26 points. Those 26 points gave McGuire a new career-high.

It was another big night for Hayden Parcel, who went 11 of 15 on his way to 25 points and three steals for Casey-Westfield. Parcel has been hot, having posted 16 or more points the last six times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jackson Maulding, who posted nine points along with seven boards and four steals.

Marshall's loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 9-7. As for Casey-Westfield, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups, which lines up perfectly with their 12-4 record this season.

Marshall didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 54-42 victory against Martinsville on the 24th. As for Casey-Westfield, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 50-42 win against Richland County on the 21st.
