If The Corning Cardinals were riding high off their 49-13 takedown of the Oroville Tigers last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Corning was dealt a 55-25 loss at the hands of Orland on Friday. While losing is never fun, Corning can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 668th, while Orland is ranked 265th).
Corning's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Quinton Davis, who gained 104 total yards and a touchdown. Another player making a difference was Devin Williams, who rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Orland got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jaime Albarran out in front who rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries. Albarran was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 65 yards. Diego Rico and his 94 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Orland's win.
Orland's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB five times. Leading the way was Grady Lloyd and his three sacks.
Corning has not been sharp recently, as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-7 record this season. As for Orland, the victory (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 7-1.
Corning will be playing in front of their home fans against Paradise at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Paradise is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. As for Orland, they will head out on the road to face off against Gridley at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Gridley will be looking to extend their current seven-game winning streak.
