Basketball Recap: Antonian Prep's Winning Streak Snapped at Nine Games

If Antonian Prep was feeling good fresh off their 100-48 takedown of Savio last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Antonian Prep Apaches took a 77-68 hit to the loss column at the hands of the St. Michael's Warriors on Tuesday. The Apaches' loss signaled the end of their nine-game winning streak.

Despite the defeat, Antonian Prep had strong showings from Edison Onwe, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and 11 rebounds, and Amare Guerra, who went 6 for 13 on his way to 19 points and eight boards. Onwe's evening made it nine games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Marshall Hicks, who posted nine points.

Even though they lost, Antonian Prep smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 15 consecutive contests.

Leading St. Michael's to victory were Nolan Barkley and Aiden Disu. Barkley went 6 of 11 en route to 20 points and eight rebounds, while Disu almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine boards. Those 20 points gave Barkley a new career-high. Bo Ogden was another key player, putting up 13 points and seven boards.

Antonian Prep's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 28-4. As for St. Michael's, their victory was their 16th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 22-4.

Antonian Prep and St. Michael's should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. Antonian Prep will challenge TMI-Episcopal at 7:00 p.m. on Friday up 137 places (30 vs. 167). Antonian Prep is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 73.8 points per game this season. Similarly, St. Michael's (ranked fifth) will meet Savio (ranked 970th) at 7:30 p.m. on January 21st.
