Haywood is 8-1 against Fayette Ware since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Tomcats will square off against the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Haywood has given up an average of 9.1 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Ripley hit Haywood with a four-run fifth inning last Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Tomcats came up short against the Tigers, falling 12-2. That's two games in a row now that the Tomcats have lost by exactly ten runs.
Haywood saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ty' Sean Mercer, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Fans were treated to a battle of the Wildcats on Wednesday. Fayette Ware blew past Bolton 13-3.
Angel Hernandez was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Landon Holden, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Wyatt Woodward, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Fayette Ware kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.2 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 12.4.
Fayette Ware's record now sits at 5-9. As for Haywood, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-17.
Tuesday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Haywood has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .433. However, it's not like Fayette Ware struggles in that department as they've averaged .559. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Haywood skirted past Fayette Ware 7-6 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Do the Tomcats have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wildcats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
