Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Grant). Everything went their way against the Avoyelles Mustangs on Tuesday as the Grant Cougars made off with a 24-0 victory. Considering the Cougars have won five matches by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Peyton Kirtland made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3.
In other batting news, Emma Futrell was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Carleigh Roe, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
Grant kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Avoyelles didn't got any hits.
The win made it two in a row for Grant and bumps their season record up to 6-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Avoyelles, their loss was their ninth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 0-11.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Grant will square off against Peabody at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Avoyelles, they will face off against Port Barre at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
