Cole Mutchler was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off eight hits (and not a single walk). He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Maine South is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 1-4 otherwise. Mutchler was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-4. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Luka Stojakovic was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with five RBI and one double. Those RBI were his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Constantine Coines, who scored a run and stole five bases while going 2-for-4.
Maine South was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .406. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Libertyville strolled into their game on Friday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They put the hurt on Buffalo Grove with a sharp 11-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won five games by eight runs or more so far this season.
The team relied heavily on Johnny Leoris, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Cole Lockwood was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-1.
Libertyville's victory bumped their record up to 9-0. As for Maine South, the win got them back to even at 4-4.
Maine South couldn't quite finish off Libertyville when the teams last played back in April of 2024 and fell 5-3. Will the Hawks have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
