Basketball Recap: Ray Jenkins' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Umatilla over Trinity Catholic

Umatilla was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They fell 69-58 to the Trinity Catholic Celtics. Sadly, that's the third time they've come up short against the Bulldogs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 60-29 two weeks ago.

Umatilla lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Ray Jenkins, who posted 14 points along with five assists and five rebounds. That's the most points Jenkins has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Tanner Gibson, who put up nine points.

Trinity Catholic had a senior duo take command as Julian Mendez went 6 for 9 on his way to 16 points and Jack Weichens went 7 of 14 en route to 17 points and five boards. Those 17 points set a new season-high mark for Weichens. Jadiel Jimenez was another key player, putting up ten points and five rebounds.

Umatilla's defeat dropped their record down to 4-13. As for Trinity Catholic, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 8-10 record.

Umatilla will square off against Mount Dora Christian Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mount Dora Christian Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past six games -- so hopefully Umatilla likes a good challenge. As for Trinity Catholic, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 67-53 loss against Orange Park on the 18th.
