The Walthill Blujays will head out on the road to take on the Wynot Blue Devils on Friday. Walthill has given up an average of 36.8 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Walthill is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They were beaten by Winside 72-40 on Friday. The Blujays were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 52-26.
Despite the defeat, Walthill saw an underclassman step up: freshman Mike Dale picked up 92 receiving yards and two TDs.
Meanwhile, you can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Wynot's strategy against Lyons-Decatur Northeast on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Blue Devils blew the Cougars out of the water with a 58-0 final score. Given the Blue Devils' advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska football rankings (they are ranked 26th, while the Cougars are ranked 85th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
Walthill better keep an eye on Lane Heimes. He was instrumental in Wynot's win, rushing for 98 yards and three scores on only 13 carries. Heimes also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making eight total tackles and defending one pass. Another player making a difference was Kotner Koch, who gained 73 total yards and two touchdowns.
Wynot didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Braylon Hans, Killian Steinhaus, and Jace Lange picked up one apiece. Lange got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
The win made it two in a row for Wynot and bumps their season record up to 4-1. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 8.05 yards per carry in those games compared to only 3.47 in the others. As for Walthill, their loss dropped their record down to 0-5.
Walthill took a serious blow against Wynot when the teams last played back in October of 2024, falling 50-8. Thankfully for the Blujays, Andrew Haberman (who rushed for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only six carries, and also caught one TD) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
