Jacob Kuciel and Luke Altieri made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Kuciel tossed five innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Altieri tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Kuciel has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. At the plate, Kuciel went 1-for-3 with one home run, while Altieri scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. Those two stolen bases gave Altieri a new career-high.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Dominic Daly, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Another was Isaiah Hill, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with three stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Akron had to kick off their season on the road last Monday, but they showed no ill effects. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over Barker. The Tigers haven't had any issues with the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Like Maryvale, Akron also got a great game from a two-way player: Ryan Owen. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Owen was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Anthony Consiglio and Collin Miller did most of the damage at the plate: Consiglio fired off two home runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI while going 2-for-3, while Miller scored three runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-4. Conlan Luck was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3.
Akron lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Barker didn't launched any home runs.
Maryvale pushed their record up to 4-0 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average this season. As for Akron, their victory bumped their record up to 1-0.
Maryvale skirted past Akron 3-2 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Do the Flyers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Tigers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
