The Thornton Trojans will head out on the road to take on the Gateway Olympians at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Thornton suffered their biggest loss since November 30, 2023 on Friday. They were beaten by Overland 84-25. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Thornton in their matchups with Overland: they've now lost three in a row.
My'la Hernandez Gutierrez was Thornton's leading scorer, having posted eight points.
Julionna Sandoval held things down on the boards with four rebounds. She took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with five assists.
Meanwhile, Gateway's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their fifth straight loss. They took a serious blow against Denver North, falling 53-11. Gateway was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 29-8.
Thornton's loss dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Gateway, they bumped their record down to 2-8 with that defeat, which was their third straight at home.
Thornton was able to grind out a solid win over Gateway when the teams last played back in February of 2023, winning 63-55. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Gateway's Aaliyah Taylor, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and 20 rebounds. Now that she won't be playing on Tuesday, will it be that much easier for Thornton to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
