The Morenci Wildcats suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Thursday. They were dealt a 69-25 loss at the hands of Pima. While losing is never fun, Morenci can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 114th, while Pima is ranked 24th).
Morenci's loss came despite strong showings from Rozlyn Funari and Sway Cordova. Funari scored nine points along with five steals, while Cordova scored six points along with three steals. Funari has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played.
Morenci struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Pima to victory, but perhaps none more so than Ady Hoopes, who scored ten points along with nine rebounds and six steals. Madison Gann was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Morenci now has a losing record at 8-9. As for Pima, they pushed their record up to 12-2 with that victory, which was their 13th straight at home.
Morenci won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Tombstone at 5:30 p.m. on January 12th. Tombstone has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Pima, they will head out on the road to face off against Safford at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Safford focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Friday.
