Tucumcari hasn't had much luck against Texico recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. Tucumcari will take on Texico in a tournament on Saturday. Tucumcari is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Tucumcari will bounce into Saturday's game after beating Raton, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. Tucumcari walked away with a 9-4 win over Raton on Friday. The game was the first time the Rattlers have beaten the Tigers on their field since May 2, 2018.
Matt Gomez made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off nine hits. Gomez was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 4-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Trip Payn, who scored three runs while going 2-for-4. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
Tucumcari was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .387. The last time their batting average was this high was back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Texico, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They put the hurt on Oak Grove Classical Academy with a sharp 18-4 victory on Friday.
Texico got a massive performance out of Micky New, who went 3-for-5 with five RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those five RBI gave New a new career-high. Jesus Chavez was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3.
The win got Texico back to even at 1-1. As for Tucumcari, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-3.
Tucumcari might still be hurting after the 21-0 defeat they got from Texico when the teams last played back in April of 2018. Can Tucumcari avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
