The South Sumter Raiders will be playing at home against the Vanguard Knights at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
South Sumter had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 25 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They claimed a resounding 63-6 win over Hernando on the road. The result was nothing new for South Sumter, who have now won four matches by 21 points or more so far this season.
South Sumter found their leader in underclassman Landen Sherman, who threw for 161 yards and four touchdowns while completing 72.7% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Rashad Johnson also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Vanguard got themselves on the board against North Marion two weeks ago, but North Marion never followed suit. They beat the Colts by the very same score they won with last week: 47-0. Given Vanguard's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 42nd, while North Marion is ranked 411th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Fred Gaskin was the offensive standout of the game as he rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries, and also threw for 112 yards and a touchdown on only seven passes. Mitchell Brown was another key contributor, rushing for 81 yards and a touchdown on only five carries.
Their wins bumped South Sumter to 7-1 and Vanguard to 6-1.
