The Zapata Hawks will head out on the road to face off against the Alice Coyotes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Zapata sitting on three straight victories and Alice on five.
Zapata put the finishing touches on their fifth blowout victory of the season on Friday. Everything went their way against La Feria as Zapata made off with a 31-7 win.
Zapata's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Landon Martinez, who threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Andres Gutierrez was in the mix too, providing Zapata with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, you're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that's exactly how it played out for Alice on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew Hidalgo out of the water with a 70-0 final score. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Alice had established a 63 point advantage.
Alice's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Lucian Cruz, who threw for 240 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 passes. Another player making a difference was Roel Gonzalez, who gained 102 total yards and two touchdowns.
Zapata's victory was their third straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 6-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 38.3 points per game. As for Alice, their win bumped their record up to 6-1.
Zapata took a serious blow against Alice in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, falling 53-13. Can Zapata avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
