Football Recap: Mt. Diablo Skates Past Vallejo with Ease

You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Mt. Diablo's strategy against Vallejo on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Red Devils blew the Redhawks out of the water with a 40-12 final score. For the Red Devils, this counts as revenge for the 7-6 win the Redhawks walked away with the last time they faced one another back in September of 2024.

Michael Vasquez had a dynamite game, throwing for 327 yards and one touchdown while picking up 13.1 yards per attempt, and also punching in one score on the ground. What's more, he racked up 29 rushing yards, the most he's had since back in October of 2024.

Mt. Diablo's run defense was locked in: Vallejo could only muster three yards per carry. While two picked up at least seven total tackles, Kaile Leffel stood above the rest. He picked up a sack and made seven total tackles (2.0 for loss). Mt. Diablo didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 7.6.

Mt. Diablo's defense didn't let Julio Ramirez., get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Leffel, Fineasi Fiefia, and Tavita Filimoehala, who each picked up one sack apiece. Leffel was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making seven total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Mt. Diablo has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 46.0 points this season. As for Vallejo, their loss dropped their record down to 1-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mt. Diablo will take on Hillsdale at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Vallejo, they will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on Elite at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
