Edcouch-Elsa is 0-4 against Harlingen South since November of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets will be playing at home against the Harlingen South Hawks at 6:00 p.m. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Edcouch-Elsa's and Pace's game on Friday was close at halftime, but Edcouch-Elsa turned on the heat in the second half with 30 points. Edcouch-Elsa put the hurt on Pace with a sharp 42-18 victory. The victory was just what Edcouch-Elsa needed coming off of a 79-29 loss in their prior match.
Meanwhile, Harlingen South put the finishing touches on their 17th blowout victory of the season on Tuesday. They blew past Pace, posting a 58-17 victory at home. Given Harlingen South's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 549th, while Pace is ranked 1353rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jiselle Montemayor and Serena Cano were among the main playmakers for Harlingen South as the former scored 12 points along with five rebounds and two steals and the latter scored 15 points along with four steals. Cano continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Fernanda Martinez, who scored three points along with ten rebounds and six steals.
Edcouch-Elsa's victory bumped their record up to 9-10. As for Harlingen South, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 20-9 record this season.
Edcouch-Elsa was dealt a bruising 36-8 defeat at the hands of Harlingen South in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Montemayor, who scored ten points along with nine rebounds and three steals.
