The Gregory-Portland Wildcats will head out on the road to square off against the Victoria East Titans at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Gregory-Portland can now show off 14 landslide victories after their most recent game on Tuesday. They took their matchup at home with ease, bagging a 88-58 win over Ray. Given Gregory-Portland's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 169th, while Ray is ranked 467th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Gregory-Portland's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Trevor Jones, who scored 26 points along with seven assists, and Shawn Williams, who dropped a double-double on 33 points and 11 rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which Williams has scored at least a third of Gregory-Portland's points. Another player making a difference was Russell Escamilla, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 12 rebounds.
Even though Victoria East has not done well against Ray recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Victoria East came out on top against Ray by a score of 60-53.
Gregory-Portland pushed their record up to 22-4 with that victory, which was their seventh straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 85.0 points per game. As for Victoria East, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 17-11 record this season.
Gregory-Portland strolled past Victoria East when the teams last played back in February of 2023 by a score of 52-33. Does Gregory-Portland have another victory up their sleeve, or will Victoria East turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
