D'Evelyn is a perfect 5-0 against Denver West since October of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Jaguars will be playing in front of their home fans against the Cowboys at 4:00 p.m. D'Evelyn has given up an average of 27.9 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
D'Evelyn came into their game on Friday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They were dealt a 48-7 loss at the hands of The Classical Academy. The Jaguars were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 42-0.
Despite the defeat, D'Evelyn saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Wes Zuniga rushed for 129 yards and one touchdown while picking up 8.1 yards per carry. Zuniga showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 58 yards.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Denver West). They took their contest on Friday with ease, bagging a 59-6 victory over Alameda. The Cowboys haven't had any issues with the Pirates recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
D'Evelyn better focus on containing Marcelo Ortiz and King Stancil as the pair were huge in Denver West's win. Ortiz rushed for 75 yards and three TDs on only eight carries, while Stancil gained 83 total yards. What's more, Stancil racked up 59 rushing yards, the most he's had since back in October of 2024.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Denver West proved: they limited Alameda to a paltry zero yards per carry. While five picked up at least six total tackles, Jorge Chavez stood above the rest. He picked up two sacks, forced one fumble, and made six total tackles (3.5 for loss). Denver West didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 10.4.
Denver West didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Freddy Lucero and Jesus Acevedo. Another thorn in Alameda's side was Chavez, who picked up two sacks, forced one fumble, and made six total tackles (3.5 for loss).
Denver West's victory bumped their record up to 7-1. As for D'Evelyn, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 4-4.
D'Evelyn took their win against Denver West in their previous matchup back in November of 2024 by a conclusive 36-14 score. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was the Cowboys' Robert Wittke, who picked up 180 receiving yards and one score. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Jaguars still be able to contain Wittke? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
