Winchester and Arlington are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Red & Black will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against the Spy Ponders at 4:15 p.m. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.
Winchester barely beat Burlington the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Red & Black blew past the Red Devils 13-2 on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Red & Black, who have now won seven contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Nick Penicaud made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed 3.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Penicaud was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Nolan Gannon and Brett Daniels did most of the damage at the plate: Gannon went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Daniels went 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those two runs gave Gannon a new career-high. Brendan Bock was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Winchester always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .581. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Arlington). They never let Watertown get on the board and left with a 14-0 victory on Thursday. The win was nothing new for the Spy Ponders as they're now sitting on three straight.
Like Winchester, Arlington also got a great game from a two-way player: Will Sadowski. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. Sadowski also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Arlington is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 3-5 otherwise. Sadowski was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jack Sadowski, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Dennis Kenneally, who went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs.
The victory made it two in a row for Winchester and bumps their season record up to 9-5. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games. As for Arlington, their victory bumped their record up to 5-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Winchester has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Arlington struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Winchester took their win against Arlington in their previous meeting back in April by a conclusive 7-1 score. Do the Red & Black have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Spy Ponders turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
