The Beech Grove Hornets suffered their biggest defeat since December 16, 2023 on Wednesday. They were the victim of a rough 71-49 loss at the hands of Southport. While losing is never fun, Beech Grove can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 304th, while Southport is ranked 135th).
Beech Grove lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Simeon Mcintosh, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds and two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jarron Murry jr., who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Even though they lost, Beech Grove were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. This was only their ninth loss (out of 12 games) when they've passed the ball that well.
Leading Southport to victory were James Kalala and Michael Johnson. Kalala scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and two steals, while Johnson scored 17 points along with five rebounds. Johnson hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. Cristian Webster was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with four steals.
Beech Grove bumped their record down to 3-12 with that defeat, which was their fifth straight at home. As for Southport, their win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-8.
Beech Grove will look to defend their home court on Friday against Indianapolis Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. Southport's road trip will continue as they head out to face Terre Haute North Vigo at 4:30 p.m. on January 20th. Terre Haute North Vigo is coming into the contest hot, having won their last eight games.
